Concrete Driveway Contractor in Shadow Mountain, Phoenix, AZ

More parking on a 1970s Shadow Mountain lot, matched to the grade you have.

Phoenix · Caliche desert floor

Shadow Mountain is a mostly 1970s neighborhood in North Phoenix around the small Shadow Mountain preserve, and the driveways here were sized for a different era. Families now have more cars than the original slab can hold, so extensions are the job we get asked for most. One of our posted jobs in Shadow Mountain is a 300-square-foot driveway extension for extra parking, finished in one day and matched to the existing grade. Replacements of worn originals come right behind.

What Shadow Mountain driveways need

The ground here is mostly caliche desert floor. A hard layer of lime-cemented soil sits anywhere from a few inches to a few feet down and holds water, so the soil above it softens and the old driveways settle. For an extension, we dig the new area to firm ground, break out caliche that sits high, and compact an aggregate base. The new section ties into the old slab with rebar dowels so the two stay level.

Shadow Mountain is in the City of Phoenix, which means any new apron or curb cut in the right-of-way is poured 6 inches thick to city standards, usually under a city permit we arrange. Our office is about two miles away, so scheduling and site visits are easy. Summer pours start in the early morning, and we plan around the monsoon from June 15 to September 30. What’s included

Every Shadow Mountain driveway we pour starts with the ground under it, caliche desert floor here, and the same list of work goes into the quote:

  • New concrete driveways
  • Driveway replacement and tear-out
  • Extensions, widening and side parking
  • RV and trailer parking pads
  • Stamped, colored and exposed-aggregate finishes
  • Aprons at the street, with the city permit where one is needed
  • Caliche, fill and soil checked before forming
  • Compacted aggregate base, deeper where you park heavy
  • Slope that sends water away from the garage
  • Control joints laid out before the pour
  • A pour timed and cured for the heat

Caliche desert floor

Gravelly desert soil on the fans and terraces of the Valley floor, often with a layer of caliche, soil cemented hard by calcium carbonate or silica, anywhere from a few inches to a few feet down.

Dig to firm ground, break out caliche that sits high in the base and haul it off the site, bring in aggregate base compacted in lifts, and slope the slab and the grade so roof and sprinkler water run away from it and off the hardpan.

What fails here first

  • Slabs sunk or cracked beside sprinkler beds and downspouts
  • Water standing along an edge for days after a storm
  • Corners and edges dropped below the next panel
  • Cracks that keep opening over the same low spot

Shadow Mountain driveway questions

Straight answers

Sam The Concrete Man North Phoenix has done driveway work in Shadow Mountain, including a posted 300-square-foot extension for extra parking matched to the existing grade. Most homes here date from the 1970s, so a widening usually ties into an older slab, and we build it on compacted aggregate base after breaking out any caliche near the surface. Aprons and RV pads get a thicker section where the weight sits.
