Concrete Driveway Contractor in North Mountain, Phoenix, AZ

North Mountain driveways, from old ranch slabs to 1990s add-ons.

Phoenix · Caliche desert floor

North Mountain Village wraps around North Mountain and Shaw Butte, and its driveways split by neighborhood. On the south side, older ranch homes often have short single-width driveways, a carport, and concrete that has cracked and settled for decades. Farther north, 1980s and 1990s subdivisions have wider two-car slabs that are now reaching the age for replacement or widening. We work across both, from full tear-outs to side parking pads.

What North Mountain driveways need

Most of North Mountain sits on caliche desert floor. The cemented lime layer under the soil can sit a few inches or a few feet down and traps water, so the soil above it softens and slabs settle. Old ranch driveways were often poured on thin base right over that layer. We dig to firm ground, break out caliche that sits high, add compacted aggregate base and set rebar on chairs, then slope the slab so water runs to the street.

North Mountain Village is part of the City of Phoenix, so the apron in the right-of-way is built 6 inches thick to city standards and usually needs a city permit we pull. Some of the newer subdivisions have an HOA, and we prepare what its review asks for. Older streets may have tight access around carports, which we plan for. What’s included

Every North Mountain driveway we pour starts with the ground under it, caliche desert floor here, and the same list of work goes into the quote:

  • New concrete driveways
  • Driveway replacement and tear-out
  • Extensions, widening and side parking
  • RV and trailer parking pads
  • Stamped, colored and exposed-aggregate finishes
  • Aprons at the street, with the city permit where one is needed
  • Caliche, fill and soil checked before forming
  • Compacted aggregate base, deeper where you park heavy
  • Slope that sends water away from the garage
  • Control joints laid out before the pour
  • A pour timed and cured for the heat

Caliche desert floor

Gravelly desert soil on the fans and terraces of the Valley floor, often with a layer of caliche, soil cemented hard by calcium carbonate or silica, anywhere from a few inches to a few feet down.

Dig to firm ground, break out caliche that sits high in the base and haul it off the site, bring in aggregate base compacted in lifts, and slope the slab and the grade so roof and sprinkler water run away from it and off the hardpan.

What fails here first

  • Slabs sunk or cracked beside sprinkler beds and downspouts
  • Water standing along an edge for days after a storm
  • Corners and edges dropped below the next panel
  • Cracks that keep opening over the same low spot

North Mountain driveway questions

Straight answers

Sam The Concrete Man North Phoenix replaces and widens driveways throughout North Mountain Village, from the older ranch homes on the south side to the 1980s and 1990s subdivisions farther north. Under the gravelly soil around North Mountain and Shaw Butte, caliche can turn up a few inches down, so crews break it out where it sits high and compact aggregate base in lifts. Thicker sections go at the apron and wherever a truck or RV parks, and work at the street end is checked with the City of Phoenix.
